Simple yet Effective Ways to Reduce Your Pain | Health Guide

Whether you have been living with pain for many years or have recently started suffering, there are many simple and easy to do methods of dealing with and even reducing your pain. Suffering from severe or chronic pain can make life seem very lonely, not enjoyable and for some people, at times unbearable. It is important that you try your best to be proactive in managing your pain to avoid feeling this way. It will take determination but it certainly can be done. Try the following tips to help with your pain.

Exercise for Pain

This method for pain management will look a little different to each individual depending on where their pain stems from and depending on their athletic ability. The best tried and tested simple activities such as walking, swimming, gardening and dancing can ease pain by directly blocking pain signals to the brain. Activity is also great for stretching stiff and tense muscles which can also be a cause of pain.

Breathing Correctly

Although practicing controlled breathing will not reduce your pain, it can prevent you from becoming anxious or panicked when you are feeling extreme pain. When pain is very intense, sometimes our bodies react by taking quick and shallow breaths. Although this is natural, it can make you feel dizzy and even set off panic. By focusing on your breathing and ensuring you are taking deep breaths through your diaphragm you can avoid muscle tension and anxiety from worsening the situation.

Maintain a Regular Sleeping Pattern

Sleep deprivation can make pain feel more intense. It can also make you feel irritable and anxious which will make dealing with your pain much more difficult. Try to maintain a routine throughout the day and night, going to bed at the same time every night and getting out of bed at the same time every morning. When possible try to avoid napping throughout the day so that you give yourself a better chance of sleeping through the night. If your sleeping is gravely interrupted by your pain and even when sticking to a schedule cannot maintain a regular sleeping pattern you should see your GP.

Keep Up Your Hobbies and Interests

Distraction is one of the best and most enjoyable ways of dealing with pain. If you have a hobby or interest that you really enjoy, shift your attention to that when your pain is bad. If you don’t have one or perhaps not one that is accessible since you pain is restricting your activity, take up something new such as photography, sewing or drawing. Not only will this take your mind off things in the moment of your pain but it will make you feel better about how you spent your time in the long run.
