For many of us, summer is the best time of the year. Lighter nights, warmer days and more sunshine! We always take precaution during the winter, making sure we stay warm and consumer enough vitamin C to keep the flu away. However with summer can bring hayfever/allergies, sunburn, tiredness…the list goes on! Therefore we need to make sure to we look after ourselves all year round.

Stay Hydrated
With warmer temperatures – especially when we venture abroad, we tend to sweat more. In order to replenish energy levels and ensure we stay hydrated it is recommended we drink at least two litres of water a day. Drinking water will also keep your skin clear, flush out toxins and boost your immune system.
Go Outside
Being active is one of the most important factors in staying healthy whatever time of year it is. However we understand that going to an indoor gym doesn’t seem too tempting when the weather is so sunny and glorious. Why not take a walk along a beach or hike up a mountain. Cycle or take up running? Taking your kids to the local park for a team game. Being active gives many health benefits that many don’t even think about. Exposure to a little sun gives us Vitamin D which is important in our bone health. Exercise, especially outdoors and with others is a great way to bond with loved ones and relieve stress.

Wear Sunscreen
As much as we encourage to spend time outside in the sunshine, it is extremely important to protect yourself from harmful UV Rays. A major myth of sunscreen is that you won’t get a ‘golden tan’ if you wear it – which is completely untrue. Sunscreen will help protect your skin from burning which gives you risk of skin cancer, dehydration, sunstroke and skin ageing. If you have a fair complexion it is advised to use a higher SPF than those with darker complexions.
Eat Your Summer Fruits & Greens
‘Bikini Body Season’ tends to motivate many to get in shape and eat healthier. With many drinking smoothies and eating more salads rather than stodgy comfort food. It is recommended we consume more berries in summer, not only because they are in season but also because they have many, many health benefits. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries and full of antioxidants which may help reduce the risk of age related illness including cancers and prevents damage to the tisues if your body. Berries are also full of vitamins and fibre which helps keep cholesterol low. As they are lower in sugar than other fruits, they also have less calories! Result!
